This is the quilt block I'm working on. Basic log cabin.

This is to demonstrate the size of the block.

Boy, do I LOVE small pieces.

Summer's passing...

We have spent our summer working on 4-H projects, playing UNO, and playing outside. We have successfully managed our way through the County Fair winning ribbons and eating too much junk food (but isn't that what the fair is about??).

Now I'm taking time to clean my neglected home. We're also starting the new school year.

I'm working on a pattern. I'm finishing a quilt belonging to my husband's aunt. I'm planning the next projects. I'm working on tiny applique pieces.

All-in-all, a successful, wonderful, tiring summer.

Summer....

Summer's going by at a steady pace. It's hard to believe we've already celebrated the 4th of July. Between the ordering of school books, 4-H, and other activities, I'm just trying to remember that...

....Once in a while you have to stop....

... Take in the scenery and breathe deeply....
... take in the pleasant sounds of children....And lastly, play around with a new idea....
Happy summer!

Still working with tiny pieces....

I had trouble downloading the picture for "Tiny Pieces" so here it is.....

These are my buds. The start of them, anyway. There is the green part for the base yet. They look really pretty (at least in my opinion) when they are done.

I've been working at improving my applique skills and trying some really difficult things. In comparison, these tiny pieces seem easy.
Here is one appliqued down. The stems are finishing at 1/8 inch, and I'm really pleased with everything. It looks a little uneven right now, but I haven't pressed any of the applique yet.
This is what my oldest is making. If I could get it one here without the black lines, you could see how truly beautiful it is.
The youngest got hold of the camera again.... This is what he did. He took another picture of himself.... and the mess behind him... What can I say, We live here, folks.

Tiny Pieces...

I've been working on buds. People think I'm crazy or weird (that's the word my grandmother used). But I love those little pieces of fabric. I'm about half way through, then the green part gets added.

The applique provides sanity in a house filled with kids and summer and school books and dishes and the mountain of laundry. I sit and ponder, while stitching tiny buds.

The Start of Summer...

Memorial Day may be the unofficial start of summer, but we wait until 180 days have been completed. I try to keep everyone in check until the school year is complete. And now it is....

Our summer plans include 4-H and the projects, day trips to local sites and maybe even hike around the park, trips to the library.... Of course, there is the "not-so-fun stuff" of de-cluttering, spring cleaning (or is it summer cleaning since I've waited so long....)

Here is a quilt block I discovered in my EQ5 some time ago and thought that any quilt block called "Contrary Wife" certainly deserved some attention...

My baby's 4!!!

Yesterday was a day for Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter icing. Four candles decorated the cake for the very happy little boy (who has been telling me to "just make my cake" for the last week...)
When he gets older, we'll have to get him a camera. He sneaks off with the camera when nobody's looking and takes pictures of all kinds of things. He's very proud of them. We're thankful it's digital and not film....
This is his forhead....
He got tractors. A favorite toy around here. They boys are fascinated when the tractors are in the field behind our house.
It's sad that's he's 4, now. And I really feel like he skipped the baby stage. At 44-45 inches tall and with 3 older siblings, he very quickly caught them and so many of their abilities.

Anyway.... Happy Birthday, Baby!

What to do next....

While I'm working on my applique for my quilt, I started thinking about the next quilt to make. So, I went back through some of my designs....

An idea for my sons... Two different colorations of the same quilt..... Or two different quilts with the same colors... Need to decide about that....

Shining Stars

An idea for my oldest daughter.... She loves the "fire colors" (red, orange and yellow) which happen to clash harshly with the preferences of her sister, with whom she shares a room...

Star Burst

Created in a moment of insanity.... Or maybe it was sanity.... There is a more complicated version this saved, too. More points.... Tons of fabric (about 60 yards??)...

Gypsy

This idea was originally started as a thought about my kids and their constant state of motion. Then it started looking like fancy chocolates.....

Chocolate

All that remains.... What to do next???

Found....

A comfy place to sleep....

A budding artist.... (it's a train)

A funny face....

Cooperation....

A quilting design....

Exhaustion...

Empty space.... (though not for long...)

Spring....

Leaves... (it feels like it's been a long time...)

Beautiful blue sky....

And a little girl without a home...

A Place to Hide...

I can remember being a kid, and my grandmother baby sitting my brother and me.
We would move the chairs away from the big picture window a little bit.
Use trays, blankets, pillows, and cushions.
And before we knew it, we had a rocketship, a house, a club house, a couple of cars... whatever.
The other day, my boys experienced this in our own living room....

Couldn't resist...

You know how you work on a project and all you see are little tidbits?? Bits here. Bits there. You only get to see things coming together if you have a design wall (which I don't have), or other large surface to look at your tidbits just resting together (which I don't have - at least that's not occupied by some little person who lives here...)....

Well, I have been working on this applique. Just bits of fabric, really. And it will get placed into one rather large project. But I wanted to get a feel for the overall quilt. Are my colors really working well together?? Is it matching my vision?? Is it going to exceed my vision?? Oh, I hate to say it... possibly fall short of my vision....

So, I placed some blocks togeter, just to see....

I think it's going to come together nicely.....

It's a good life....

... Busy, but it's good. Work, quilting, home schooling.... only to name a few things on my plate.

There are bean seeds sitting in various locations for a science experiment.

History "work sheets" to be completed.

Strips to pin together for piecing.

And, oh yeah, need to figure out WHAT to feed these people for supper.... That could be the most challenging part.

I stayed up WAY too late one evening to figure the applique and quilting for my quilt. Think I have it all figured out. And I'm really excited to try out a new batting. I am going to do a test piece before a commit a 100" square quilt to it.

Obession with tiny pieces and amazing details...

As I've been going through my quilting adventures, I've come to the conclusion that the smaller the pieces, the better. Really. I LOVE small pieces. One inch squares, I'm thinking even smaller. The only limitation is can you quilt it....

And decorative, elaborate quilting. The kind that makes you stand in awe because of the detail and the amount of time it took....

I'm following my obsession and seeing where it leads me.
